New Patient Information / FAQ

We are always excited to meet our new patients and to discuss the treatment options. If the patient is ready for treatment, the first visit will consist of a record taking appointment involving digital pictures of face and teeth, two different types of orthodontic x-rays, and impressions of the teeth. We usually allow an hour for this appointment. We also provide a complimentary examination by the orthodontist. Please assist us by providing the following information before or at the time of the exam.

Any panoramic x-ray taken within the past 6 months

All paperwork that has been sent or given to you from our office or the office of the general dentist involving the medical/dental history and personal history

Why should I choose an orthodontist over a general dentist?

Just as there are specialists in medicine (such as cardiologists, gastroenterologists, neurologists, etc.), there are specialists in dentistry. Orthodontists are dental specialists who dedicate their professional lives to correcting misaligned teeth and evaluating facial relationships.

Orthodontists are qualified dentists, who after graduating from dental school, go on to additional full-time university-based education in an accredited orthodontic residency program supervised by orthodontists. That training lasts at least two academic years—sometimes more. By learning about tooth movement (orthodontics) and guidance of facial development (dentofacial orthopedics), orthodontists are the uniquely trained experts in dentistry to straighten teeth and evaluate jaw relationships.

Are there more than one type of braces?

 Metal braces- mini stainless steel

Metal braces are the most loved by our patients and staff since they provide the ability to have "colors" placed on the brackets and changed every appointment. Of course, West Virginia Mountaineers and Virginia Tech colors are always in demand as well as various school colors in the area. They are easy to apply and reapply as needed.

Ceramic braces- another esthetic alternative

Ceramic braces are made of translucent (clear) material.

They are more popular with adults, due to the cosmetic appeal.

Invisalign/Clear Align

The invisalign type system is a series of clear overlay retainers or aligners produced in our lab to gradually move the teeth. This system is only for adults with certain orthodontic bite problems. It is not usually for children and is not appropriate for every adult. Only an orthodontist can determine if this approach is an option for you.
